A somewhat strange city with some fine examples of over-spending - deserted 8 lane motorways and the Basilique de Notre Dame de la Paix which itself contains more stained glass than in the whole of France and is claimed to be the largest place of worship in the world.
Yamoussoukro

The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro dominates from every point in the city of Yamoussoukro, one of the most unlikely capitals in the world. The Cathedral is the largest in the world, a few m. higher than it's example in Rome. President Félix Houphouët-Boigny of Cote d'Ivoire had the cathedral built 20 years ago in his birthplace that he had made capital of the country. Twenty years later Abidjan remains the economical and political capital of the country though.

Another one that belongs in a museum of some sort. Interestingly, the word steam roller is still used in many parts of the world (cf ångvält) even though they haven't been steam powered for several generations.

The covered walkway in front of the university is to protect residents from the sun and rain. This type of thing will become common as Africa becomes prosperous.

Felix Houphouët-Boigny built this magnificent Basilica in Yamoussoukro, his home village. It, like several other monumental buildings, seems very out of place in Africa.

In the village turned capital city of Yamoussoukro, an artificial lake holds a number of these crocodilians. They used to be fed with live chickens.
