On the banks of the Saigon River the most important economic centre in Vietnam is teeming with enterprises. The French colonial influence can still be seen in the wide elegant boulevards and historic buildings.

The total area of green space in Ho Chi Minh City has shrunk up by half to only about 535 hectares within the past 11 years... A number of projects will start this year to add more green space to the heavily-populated city, including the expansion of the Gia Dinh Park in Phu Nhuan District by 17.4 hectares and the construction of six new parks and gardens in Go Vap District.

With a decrepit building as its only venue for performing in the city, the very existence of cai luong (reformed theatre) is under threat, a heartbreaking scenario for professionals and fans of this traditional performance art, who have been longing for a new and modern theatre. As the cradle of cai luong, HCM City needs a theatre up to international standardise, says People’s Artist Doan Hoang Giang. On a site of 1,632 sq.m on Tran Hung Dao street, in district 1, the theatre was founded in 1960, and has witnessed the rise and fall of cai luong ever since. There were once more than 10 other cai luong theatres in the city but they have all closed in recent years because of falling audiences.

Most people have little idea about Vietnam (at least most people I know didn’t seem to) other than it was once in a war with America (and didn’t they win?). Read more about Vietnam here!

"A WHO study says that sound pollution could impair our physical and mental health, an alarming conclusion when applied to Ho Chi Minh City" That's not The Who, you understand.

Ho Chi Minh CIty - Ben Thanh Market Shoes

The Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is the most impressively huge indoor market I've seen.

This photo was taken at one of dozens of stalls selling shoes in the tightly packed market.

There are several drain pipes like this around the exterior of the Fine Arts Museum building in Ho Chi Minh City, Veitnam. Some have been replaced with what look like newer pipes, but the old ones are gorgeous.
