A protest has taken place in the Indian capital Delhi over the release of a group of men who beat up young women in a pub. The case of so-called moral policing has shocked the country. Forty activists from the right-wing Sri Ram Sena barged into a bar in the city of Mangalore and attacked the women. Video of the incident shows how the women were pulled by their hair and thrown out of the pub by almost 30 men. The incident has caused a furore, drawing criticism from all quarters. Some 28 men were arrested but later released on bail. The activists said the women were violating traditional Indian values by drinking alcohol in public and warned that the women would face dire consequences if seen in pubs again. The incident took place on January 24, just two days before India celebrated Republic Day. Video of the attack has become one of the most watched clips on YouTube. Activists from various NGO’s held banners with slogans like “Stop Talibanisation of India.”

By R. Jeffrey Smith and Joby Warrick Washington Post Staff Writers Thursday, May 28, 2009 Sometime next year, at a tightly guarded site south of its capital, Pakistan will be ready to start churning out a new stream of plutonium for its nuclear arsenal, which will eventually include warheads for ballistic missiles and cruise missiles capable of being launched from ships, submarines or aircraft. About 1,000 miles to the southwest, engineers in India are designing cruise missiles to carry nuclear warheads, relying partly on Russian missile-design assistance. India is also trying to equip its Agni ballistic missiles with such warheads and to deploy them on submarines. Its rudimentary missile-defense capability is slated for a major upgrade next year.

“Hey, Mr. Friedman,” they say, “would you like to take a little spin around New Delhi in our car?” Oh, I say, I’ve heard that line before. Ah, they say, but you haven’t seen this car before. It’s a plug-in electric car that is also powered by rooftop solar panels — and the two young women, recent Yale grads, had just driven it all over India in a “climate caravan” to highlight the solutions to global warming being developed by Indian companies, communities, campuses and innovators, as well as to inspire others to take action.

One pleasing aspect of backing up catalogs is you come across the odd image here and there and slipped through the net first time round (or even second!) - This is a street scene from my trip to India a couple of years ago. I found an old processing action that I used to use a lot before I swapped all my computers around and quite like its effect on these type of pics. It's nothing clever, just a solid black layer in hue blend mode with opacity reduced to 40%.
