Khartoum, Sudan - France’s foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, today commended the courage of Lubna Hussein a Sudanese journalist and women’s rights activist who was recently released from jail after charges of violating Sudan’s rigid dress code. Last September, the judge ordered the female journalist to pay a fine of 500 pounds ($200) or else be jailed for 30 days after being convicted of indecent dressing. Lubna refused to pay the fine but she was released well before her one month jail sentence expired.
Paris, France - France's foreign minister has praised the courage of a journalist who has led a fight against a law in Sudan allowing for women to be flogged for wearing pants. Bernard Kouchner says Lubna Hussein — who was released in September after two months behind bars — is a model for showing the courage to rebel. The 43-year-old journalist says she had been unfairly prevented from leaving her country for violating an indecency law but got out by hiding under a head-to-toe Islamic niqab.
Paris, France - A journalist who became a global celebrity when she was prosecuted for wearing trousers has defied a ban on leaving Sudan to rally support in Europe for the emancipation of Muslim women. Visiting France last week, Lubna Hussein said she had received death threats since beginning a campaign to stop the flogging and imprisonment of women who wear trousers. She risked punishment for leaving Sudan illegally, but this would not stop her from exposing the “absurdity” of laws that humiliated women.
Khartoum, Sudan - In less than six months, the Sudanese will be choosing their next president. A young Sudanese voter writes about the need for change, the power of popular movements, and one promising candidate with a campaign on Facebook.
