Rabat, Morocco - The premises of Morocco's Journal Hebdomadaire (JH), an independent weekly based in Casablanca, have been sealed off by order of a bankruptcy court, staff on the paper said Thursday. A legal official said the offices were sealed on Wednesday after the court in Casablanca on Monday ordered the liquidation of the heavily indebted Media Trust, which edited the paper until 2003. "The JH will doubtless not appear this week because we have no access to the offices. We have no place to work," one of the journalists on the paper told AFP. The Media Trust was placed in receivership by the court because of "large debts" to the social security fund, several banks and the tax administration, said a lawyer for creditors of the Journal Hebdomadaire, Abdelkebir Tabih.

Currently, I'm a Peace Corps Nominee. For those unfamiliar with PC lingo (which I certainly was before last year), a nominee is someone who has been nominated for a particular region and focus are but has yet to be invited. So I have been nominated for Business Advising in Sub-Saharan Africa leaving June 2010. The next step is to patiently await word from my placement officer who will (hopefully) tell me that I have an invitation. The invitation gives the specific date, place, and job that I will be doing in the Peace Corps. Make sense? But, before that I will be doing a separate program in Morocco through Cross-Cultural Solutions. I will be in Rabat, Morocco from January to April.

This, by far, has been the most rewarding experience I could have ever asked for and so much more fulfilling than I could have imagined. We were there to assist the teachers by offering enrichment programs and activities to the kids, and personalized attention they don't get otherwise. I feel so blessed to have met them, albeit briefly, but I will always remember this experience and think about these children and wonder about where they end up in life. An interesting thing happened later tonight as I was in a taxi to Marjane (pronounced "marjohn" - a mall with the equivalent of a WalMart). We shared the taxi with a woman who is working at the S. African embassy. She asked what we had been doing and I explained the program and the kids. She said that she was a child who benefitted from volunteers like us many years ago. This brought a smile to my face because she is well-educated and successful. I hope for a similar ending for all of the kids I met on this trip.

I was told those tangerines that grown on the street are purely decorative and not for eating. I think they clearly need to put signs next to the trees to ward off the hungry tourists - who knew?
