Kathryn Kern, a 2006 Lexington High School and 2010 UMass Amherst graduate, will bike across the country this summer.
Kathryn Kern's penchant to help others began at a young age, starting when her mother, Anne, sent her to Girl Scouts.
"I've just grown up in the community service aspect," said Kern, a Lexington resident. "It was in my system to get out there and have fun while doing something for someone else."
Kern has experience improving the lives of others. She's been enrolled in Habitat for Humanity since her freshman year of college, and in 2008 she spent six weeks in Morocco helping children through Cross Cultural Solutions. But this ride, with its self-sacrificial and exceedingly generous implication, is her crowning point.

The Kasbah occupies the oldest part of the city, the site of the original ribat, and commands magnificent views over the river and ocean from its cliff-top perch. Predominately residential, with tranquil alleys and whitewashed houses mostly built by Muslim refugees from Spain, this is a picturesque place to wander. Many foreigners are buying up the houses here, and it’s easy to see the appeal.
Sucheta Rawal, at 30 is an Alumni of CCS. She took a volunteer vacation trip to Russia last year and has inspired other friends to join her this year to Morocco. While visiting orphanages, hospitals and old homes in Yaroslavl in Russia, she realized how similar we humans are in every part of the world. The people she met had the same aspirations, desires, needs and problems, as they do here. She also enjoyed bringing smiles to the faces of little children and talking with the older women. Sucheta is originally from India and came to the US for higher education. She works as a strategy consultant and volunteers for a number of organizations in the Atlanta area. Her interests include teaching international cooking classes, writing and travelling.
The fertile plains inland from Rabat drew settlers to the area as far back as the 8th century Be. Both the Phoenicians and the Romans set up trading posts in the estuary of the Oued Bou Regreg River in Sala, today’s Chellah. The Roman settlement, Sala Colonia, lasted long after the empire’s fall and eventually became the seat of an independent Berber kingdom.
