`Algiers the White` as it is known by some, due to the glistening white of its buildings in contrast to the sea. There is much to visit, the casbah quarter, mosques, churches and Cathedral.

Cairo, Egypt - Maybe the war between Algeria and Egypt is not quite finished. The Cairo International Book Fair, to be held this January, has already experienced the fallout of the recent football row that saw Egyptians and Algerians attack one another in the street. Publishers are pulling out of the region’s largest book fair. The Algerian National Union of Book Publishers has decided, after the meeting of the Executive Board in its regular session held December 17 last, to boycott the Cairo International Book Fair to be held in January.

Algeria is planning to introduce a centralised system for filtering (i.e. censoring) the internet. It is also proposing stiff penalties for anyone who circumvents the government's filtering, according to the Magharebia news website. Algeria is one of the few Arab countries (along with Egypt and Iraq) that does not routinely block access to disapproved websites at present, though it seeks to control internet use in other ways.

Algiers, Algeria - Maghreb film-makers and directors made a strong showing in France at the 14th International Prize for Mediterranean Documentary and Reportage organised by the Mediterranean Centre for Audiovisual Communication (CMCA), which ended its 5-day run in Marseilles on Monday (December 14th).

The Notre Dame d'Afrique is the basilica of Algiers, Algeria. It was inaugurated in 1872, after fourteen years of construction. The architect, Fromageau, was named in 1859 as chief architect for ecclesiastical buildings in French Algeria by the minister of Colonies, and he used the byzantine style that was very much in vogue for church buildings in France at that time. Its floorplan is particular in that sense that the choir is situated on the southeast instead of the usual east side of the building.

The basilica is located on the North side of Algiers, on a 124m cliff overseeing the Bay of Algiers. It could be reached by a cable car that as of 2007 seems to be broken. It is considered as a counterpiece to the Notre-Dame de la Garde on the other side of the Mediterranean in Marseille. Its symbolic and religious importance can be summed up by the inscription on the apse: Notre Dame d'Afrique priez pour nous et pour les Musulmans. (Our lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims)
