Nearly 20 years of war (1974-94) left Mozambique’s infrastructure either destroyed or neglected and the provision of services difficult – for example, only 30 percent of the population had access to safe water. The pathways in Maputo are amazing. Although often in a poor condition it is a great and comfortable feeling to walk these green, shady, broad promenades along the streets.
