Some beautiful Mayan artifacts and Guatemalan art do not forgive the polluted urban sprawl.

Tropical Storm Agatha swept across Central America yesterday, bringing torrential rain that killed more than 100 people and opened a 60m-deep sinkhole in Guatemala City which reportedly swallowed up a three-storey building.

I found some attractions here.

Each of those big stems of bananas was about 22 lbs. That cost 22 quetzales (under 8 cents a pound)

The fish vendors were closed on this visit. This is typical of a Guatemalan meat vendor. The meat is hung unrefrigerated. This vendor is unusual in that there is a refrigerated case.

This is the stem end of a plantano. I'm not sure how these are cut off into the bunches of bananas we get in the store I had quite a time with ours and we just left them on the stem.

This pineapple lady was as sweet as her pinas. There are a lot more pineapples than in the photo, but she said she wore her comfortable shoes that day and not her good shoes. She asked that her shoes not be shown in the photo

If I recall correctly we bought eight pineaples for 15 quetzales (about $1.50 each USD).

Over 1,500 vendors sell at Central de Mayoreo (CENMA) in Guatemala City. It is 20 city blocks long. The stalls (galpón) have seemingling endless produce. Imagine an entire city block with nothing but onions.

It is not only produce from Guatemala, but from neighboring countries such as El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. There is also international produce. There are meat markets, fish vendors, grocery stores and restaurants.

This massive mega-mercado in zona 12 started on October 2, 2000. More on the market website (in Spanish).

Restaurants and supermarkets buy here as well as the local housewife. This page has testimonials from shoppers about how they love, love, love this market. I love, love, love this market. It also has a table of what each of the galpón sells.

Then the ex-drug addict born again Christian taxi driver drove us to Antigua. We stopped somewhere along the way to look at G City from the top of a mountain, and dodged cars on the highway to get to the vantage point.

So we had to go and find the Ticabus office to book our passage to Panama. Helpfully, they had moved from the address in the guidebook, the phonebook and the address all the taxi drivers and the hotel knew.

So we randomly drove around G City looking for the damn thing with a born again Christian ex-drug addict taxi driver.
