Fun and colorful wearables from Vietnam.

In his memoirs, McNamera apoligized for Vietnam, not to the millions of dead vietnamese or agent oranged deformed babies, or the devestated culture and society, but to the US population. The war was just too costly. -The errors were "not of values or intentions but of judgment and capabilities" -They also badly misjudged Ho Chi Minh's nationalism ("It doesn't matter whether [ho chi minh] is a nationalist or communist" -mcnamera years before) -To his credit, McNamara recognized earlier than most of his colleagues that the war was not winnable. We stopped at this fishing village for lunch on the boat--but you could buy fresh fish or shellfish from a vendor and the boat would make it for you! I wish I'd realized that before we sat down to eat--one woman and her partner got these amazing crabs that I was quite jealous of.

It was similar to, but different from, the limestone outcrops in the Krabi and Phuket area.

For about 20 minutes the sun came out, but otherwise it was hazy and pretty dreary out.

The tour took us into a smaller boat and through a few little caves, then we climbed to a ginormous cave. Both photos below.

Did you know that John McCain was a POW? No? He didn't mention it in his campaign?

Anyway, McCain and a bunch of other POWs were held at this former Vietnamese prison (during French occupation). It's now a museum.

You basically have to walk in the street, and you are at great risk of being run over by a scooter, car, bicycle, or person. Crossing the street is even scarier than just walking along it.

Apparently there are 5 fataliites a day in Ha Noi due to traffic accidents. I am so not surprised.

Oh, did I mention the HONKING?

Years ago we visited Bali on vacation. We had a driver who constantly asked "take picture?" when we passed a picturesque rice paddy. At that time, we lived in Taipei, Taiwan, and rice paddies were all too common, so we waved him off.

I wish the driver on our tour to Hao Long Bay had offered to stop for a photo on the way home. (This was taken through the windshield. I was "lucky" enough to be seated in the front of the tour van.)

It was a nice day trip to go to the coast and see all the islands. They remind me a bit of the mountains in a childhood book I loved, Ming Lo Moves the Mountain.
