DUSHANBE (Reuters) - The United States has no plans to close its military airbase in Kyrgyzstan, the U.S. regional military chief said Saturday.

Kyrgyz Prime Minister Igor Chudinov traveled to Moscow to meet with Russia’s political supremo, Vladimir Putin. The trip is taking place amid swirling rumors that Kyrgyzstan may boot US military forces out of a military base outside the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek. Russia has offered Bishkek up to $2 billion in assistance. Some Central Asian experts believe the Kremlin may be conditioning the aid offer on a Kyrgyz move to close the coalition air base at Manas.

U.S. lawmakers are urging Kyrgyzstan's president not to sign legislation they say will severely restrict religious freedom in the Central Asian country. The U.S. representatives, Alcee Hastings, Benjamin Cardin and Christopher Smith, and members of the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the U.S. Helsinki Commission, sent a letter to Kyrgz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev on Wednesday, saying the passage of a draft religious law would violate international norms and damage the country's reputation.

Kyrgyzstan has shrugged off U.S. concerns and adopted an amended a law that will strengthen state control over religious groups, government media reported Tuesday. (Associated Press)
