Government security forces were implicated in the deaths of at least 90 of the hundreds of people killed in religious violence in the central Nigerian city of Jos last month

Yup, "witches" are still being killed on a daily basis in Africa. And you don't have to be willing to believe The Huffington Post to realize this -- the stories are covered almost daily on the SubGenius Bulldada Newsblog. But when the USA funds the schools that teach the religious values that cause people to do this? Then we become a country that is literally funding child torture and abuse. In the name of religion, of course. It seems religion makes people in the 3rd world far more savage than in the first world. I guess they don't have armies to hide behind like we do. At least they're not beheading and bombing random people -- But no, they just do it to their children instead.

A Pentecostal preacher from Nigeria has made big plans to save your soul. (Newsweek)

What better way to kick off the New Year with UNRELEASED Fela tracks. These recordings were recorded for radio in Lagos, back in 1965, and have never been released, EVER. This post also includes a very interesting 1967 Fela interview. Check it out!!! Happy New Year and best wishes for 2009.

At a hospital in Enugu, a large city in Nigeria's southeast, 20 teenage girls were rescued in May in a police swoop on what was believed to be one of the largest infant trafficking rings in the west African country.

Nigeria, Yoruba - Female Statuette

COUNTRY: NIGERIA
ETHNIC GROUP: YORUBA
MATERIAL: WOOD
HEIGHT: 17 in.

This piece was made exclusively for the international art market. It's about 17 in. tall. I bought it because the carving is very high quality, as evidenced by the attention to detail. It is also faithful to traditional motifs.

Nigeria, Yoruba - Gelede Mask Dancer 1971

Although the masks represent women, the dancers are men. The purpose of the Gelede masquerade is to please the "mothers".

I don't know who took this great photograph.

COUNTRY: NIGERIA
ETHNIC GROUP: YORUBA
MATERIALS: WOOD, PIGMENT
HEIGHT: 39 in.

This is Oneal, the Earth Goddess of the Yoruba. Oneal statues are usually cast in bronze and are not this large. This is the only one I have seen in wood. I consider this one of the top pieces in my collection.
