TUNIS (Reuters) - A strong performance by Tunisia's mechanical industries helped the country's manufacturing sector output to rise 5.4 percent in the first half this year from the same period last year, official figures showed on Monday.
Growth in the same period a year earlier was 9.9 percent, according to the state-run Statistics Institute.
Production in mechanical industry, the biggest employer sector, jumped 16.1 percent over the period, and food processing production rose 5.4 percent while clothing output was down 2.8 percent due to fierce competition from Asian markets, the Institute added.
Manufacturing represents almost one-fifth of the emerging North African market's gross domestic product and employs 20 percent of its labor force.

Labor negotiations update. Increase for salaries around 9% is what UGTT is asking.
