Five anti-corruption campaigners in Gabon were arrested just before New Year and are being detained in harsh conditions on unknown charges, non-governmental organisations in France said on Tuesday. One of the five, Gregory Ngbwa Mintsa, is a plaintiff in a suit filed in a French court against Gabonese President Omar Bongo by anti-corruption activists who accuse the veteran leader of buying French properties with the proceeds of corruption.

(CNN) -- Seven French soldiers were killed when their military helicopter crashed off the coast of Gabon, the country's official news agency said Sunday.
Two French soldiers survived the Saturday night crash, the agency said.
French Defense Minister Herve Morin arrived in Gabon's capital of Libreville on Sunday and met with President Omar Bongo to coordinate recovery efforts for the body of one of the seven soldiers whose remains had not been found.

Sur les dix militaires qui se trouvaient à bord de l'appareil, quatre appartenaient au détachement de l'aviation légère de l'armée de terre (ALAT) basé à Libreville. Parmi eux, figurent les deux soldats décédés, le blessé léger et l'un des disparus.

L'autre unité frappée par cet accident, le 13e Régiment de dragons parachutistes de Dieuze (Moselle), compte cinq disparus dans ses rangs ainsi que le soldat retrouvé indemne, tous commandos des forces spéciales.
