"Mugabe’s corrupt, violent and profoundly destructive reign has left Zim-babwe in shambles. It’s a nation overwhelmed by poverty, the H.I.V./AIDS pandemic and hyperinflation. Once considered the “breadbasket” of Africa, Zimbabwe is now a country that cannot feed its own people. The unemployment rate is higher than 80 percent. Malnutrition is widespread, as is fear."

"Mukoko and several other members of the main opposition MDC are accused of recruiting people for an armed insurgency to topple President Robert Mugabe. Prison sources said this week that Mukoko was being held in a section reserved for hardcore criminals. “We have a women’s section, but she has been placed in the tougher section that normally houses men,” said a warder."

"President-elect Barack Obama's nominee for UN ambassador, Susan Rice, Thursday vowed to get tough with Zimbabwe and revive US leadership globally with an emphasis on beefing up peacekeeping capacity. At her Senate confirmation hearing, Rice pledged to confront the regime of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, urging China, Russia and southern African countries to join the Obama administration in isolating the veteran strongman. "Their interests no longer, frankly, coincide" with Mugabe's regime, the former diplomat told the Senate foreign relations committee, after its chairman John Kerry said she was an "outstanding choice" for the UN job."

" Dr. Chris Beyrer, Professor of Epidemiology and International Health at Johns Hopkins University told Religion Dispatches that the scale of human suffering and death may be worse than Pol Pot’s Cambodia in the 1970s, and that regional and international inaction is analogous to the international community’s failure to stop the genocide in Rwanda in the 1990s. He estimates that about half of the population of Zimbabwe is either dead or has fled to neighboring countries. “I have been at this for a long time,” he said, his world-weary voice seeking to convey the urgency of the accelerating Zimbabwean disaster. “I’ve never seen so total a collapse of a health system.”"

Day 18_ 10,000 Dollar = nothing

I did two important things today: one: cleaning my room and two: apllying for the Rising voices grant. While doing number one I found this note of 10.000 Zimbawean dollars....you can't even buy a bread from this Matizi told me...
